Player Profiles: Strikers

TOM CLARE

On the 23rd June 2021, Macclesfield FC completed the signing of powerful striker Tom Clare, with the striker signing a one year deal at the club. Clare started off his career at Barnsley before moving to Bradford City. After an impressive loan spell, Clare signed for Boston United. Clare also spent time at Bradford Park Avenue, Buxton and Pontefract before joining Macclesfield FC. On the 18th August 2021, after 7 goals in 5 games for Macclesfield FC, Director Of Football Robbie Savage announced on a Facebook Live on the Star Lane End Facebook group that the club had received a bid from an unnamed club but Clare had rejected the move. After 19 goals in 33 appearances for the Silkmen, on the 10th March 2022, it was announced that Clare had signed a new deal to keep him at the club until the end of the 2023/24 season. On the 8th April 2022, Tom Clare was awarded the Macclesfield FC top goalscorer award for the 2021/22 season, after scoring 23 goals in 36 appearances. On the 12th January 2023, it was announced that Tom Clare would be taking an ‘extended period of leave’ away from the club to appear on the reality TV show Love Island. Up until this point, during the 2022/23 season, Tom Clare had found first team opportunities limited, starting 8 matches, with a further 12 appearances from the bench, scoring 8 goals. On the 6th May 2023, it was announced that Tom Clare had been released by Macclesfield FC. Tom Clare made 57 appearances for the Silkmen, scoring 31 goals. In January 2024, Tom Clare appeared in, and went on to win, reality TV show Love Island: All Stars. On the 7th March 2024, Macclesfield FC announced that Tom Clare had re-joined the club until the end of the 2023/24 season.

EDY MAIECO

Edy Maieco signed for Macclesfield FC on the 4th June 2021. Capable of playing as a striker, in the number ten position or on either wing, the tricky and skillful attacker started off his career at Staylbridge Celtic. Maieco spent time at Glossop North End under Peter Band as well as Mossley, Macclesfield Town and Clitheroe before joining Macclesfield FC. On the 4th April 2022, after 6 goals in 26 appearances for the Silkmen, it was announced that Maieco had been offered a new deal at Macclesfield FC. On the 6th April 2022, Edy Maieco signed a new deal at Macclesfield FC, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2022/23 season. On the 23rd May 2022, it was announced that Edy Maieco had left Macclesfield FC by mutual consent. Maieco made 26 appearances for the Silkmen, scoring 6 goals. On the 10th June 2022, Edy Maieco signed for FC United of Manchester. On the 23rd September 2022, Edy Maieco signed for Hyde United. In May 2023, Edy Maieco was released by Hyde United. In August 2023, Edy Maieco signed for Northern Premier League side Warrington Rylands. In October 2023, Edy Maieco signed for Stafford Rangers. In December 2023, Edy Maieco joined Bradford Park Avenue.

KIELEN ADAMS

On the 5th August 2021, Macclesfield FC completed the signing of striker Kielen Adams from Clitheroe. Adams started off his career at Oldham Athletic before moving to Bradford City. Adams then returned to Oldham Athletic for his first professional deal. Adams spent loan deals at Hyde United and Chorley before signing for Clitheroe. Kielen Adams can also play on the left of the midfield and has a keen eye for goal. On the 18th March 2022, Kielen Adams left Macclesfield FC to join Marine for a club record undisclosed fee. During his time at the Silkmen, Adams made 29 appearances, scoring 7 goals. In November 2022, Kielen Adams joined Ashton United on loan until the end of the year. In December 2022, Kielen Adams signed a permanent deal at Ashton United.


JAMES BERRY-MCNALLY

On the 5th August 2021, Macclesfield FC announced the loan signing of James Berry-McNally from Conference National side Altrincham. Berry-McNally played for Liverpool and Wigan Athletic at youth levels before signing for Hull City. After his release from Hull, Berry-McNally signed for Altrincham and was immediately loaned to Macclesfield FC. After 4 goals in 21 appearances for the Silkmen, on the 6th January 2022, it was announced that Berry-McNally’s loan had been extended until the end of the 2021/22 season. After 11 goals in 28 appearances, on the 25th February 2022, Robbie Savage announced on the Official Macclesfield FC Facebook fan page that the club had made an offer to Altrincham to bring James Berry-McNally to the club on a permanent deal. On the 10th March 2022, James Berry-McNally signed a permanent deal at Macclesfield FC for a club record undisclosed fee from Altrincham. James Berry-McNally signed a deal until the end of the 2023/24 season. James Berry-McNally was named the Macclesfield FC’s Sponsors Player Of The Year for the 2021/22 season. After 21 goals in 30 appearances during the 2022/23 season, including 2 hat tricks, on the 4th January 2023, Macclesfield FC announced that James Berry-McNally had signed a new and improved deal to make him the highest paid player in the history of Macclesfield FC. At the time of his new contract, James Berry-McNally had scored 43 goals in 68 appearances for The Silkmen. James Berry-McNally was named Macclesfield FC’s Player Of The Year, Players’ Player Of The Year, Sponsors’ Player Of The Year, Top Goalscorer, won the Goal Of The Season (For his 2nd goal against Widnes on the 2nd January 2023- James Berry-McNally scored a hat trick in this game) and also won the Golden Boot for the Northern Premier League West Division for the 2022/23 season. During the 2022/23 season, James Berry-McNally made 41 appearances, scoring 31 times. At the time of these awards, James Berry-McNally had scored 53 times for Macclesfield FC in 79 appearances. In June 2023, it was announced that James Berry-McNally had been named in the Northern Premier League West Division team of the year for the 2022/23 season. James Berry-McNally was also named Northern Premier League West Division Player Of The Year for the 2022/23 season. On the 11th August 2023, James Berry-McNally left Macclesfield FC to sign for National League side Chesterfield for an ‘club record undisclosed fee’. James Berry-McNally made 79 appearances for the Silkmen, scoring 53 goals. At the time of leaving the club, James Berry-McNally was Macclesfield FC’s record goalscorer.


TYLER JAMES

Tyler James signed a first team contract with Macclesfield FC on the 3rd August 2021. James excelled for the Macclesfield Town FC BTEC Academy before signing for Macclesfield FC. His impressive performances for the Macclesfield Town FC BTEC Academy earned him a trial at Championship side Huddersfield Town. On the 12th September 2021, James signed dual registration terms with Glossop North End. James only featured once for Glossop North End before returning to Macclesfield FC. Tyler James was the top goalscorer for Macclesfield FC Under 23’s for the 2021/22 season, however, was limited to only two substitute appearances for the first team in the same season. On the 18th July 2022, it was announced that Tyler James had signed for Prestwich Heys. James managed 2 substitute appearances for Macclesfield FC, without scoring a goal. In October 2023, Tyler James joined Padiham. Alongside playing for Padiham, Tyler James also featured for Macclesfield FC International Academy.


SCOTT MCGOWAN

On the 9th September 2021, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of prolific striker Scott McGowan from 1874 Northwich. McGowan has an excellent scoring record in the Non League, playing for Styal before joining Congleton Town where the striker scored 30 goals for the club in 56 appearances. In 2016, McGowan joined 1874 Northwich and scored 135 times in 199 appearances over two spells at the club after a brief spell at Nantwich Town in 2020. After 3 goals in 15 appearances for Macclesfield FC, it was announced on the 11th January 2022 that McGowan had left the club by mutual consent. On the 14th January 2022, McGowan re-signed for 1874 Northwich. On the 20th May 2022, Scott McGowan signed for Stockport Town.


DANIEL PEMBERTON

Although not officially announced as a Macclesfield FC first team player, Daniel Pemberton, a regular for the Macclesfield FC reserve team was named on the bench in the Cheshire Senior Cup against Cheadle Heath Nomads on the 2nd November 2021. On the 5th March 2022, Pemberton left Macclesfield FC Reserves and signed for 1874 Northwich. In July 2022, Daniel Pemberton signed for Knutsford FC.


BRANDON LONSDALE

On the 26th November 2021, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of striker Brandon Lonsdale on a one month loan deal from Championship side Blackburn Rovers. Lonsdale made his debut for Blackburn Rovers Under 23’s in September 2021 and had spent time previously on loan at at Lancaster City before making the move to The Silkmen. On the 5th January 2022, it was announced that Lonsdale’s loan at Macclesfield FC had been extended until the end of the season. On the 4th April 2022, it was announced that Brandon Lonsdale had returned to Blackburn Rovers. Lonsdale made 6 appearances for the Silkmen, with his only goal for the club coming against Skelmersdale United on the 29th January 2022, in a 3-1 win for Macclesfield FC. In May 2022, Brandon Lonsdale was released by Blackburn Rovers. In October 2022, Brandon Lonsdale signed for Nelson FC. In March 2023, Brandon Lonsdale signed for Padiham. In September 2023, Brandon Lonsdale signed for North West Counties League Division One North side Darwen.


ANDY OWENS

On the 19th January 2022, Andy Owens signed for Macclesfield FC. An experienced striker, who previously played at centre back earlier in his career, had featured for 18 different sides before joining the SIlkmen. Owens’ most successful season came in the 2018/19 season for Connah’s Quay Nomads where he scored 12 goals in 38 appearances. Owens had been previously playing for Conference North side Chorley before dropping down to the North West Counties to join Macclesfield FC. After 1 goal in 9 appearances for Macclesfield FC, on the 21st March 2022, it was announced that Andy Owens had signed a contract extension at the Silkmen until the end of the 2022/23 season. After 2 goals in 12 appearances for Macclesfield FC, on the 30th August 2022, Andy Owens re-joined Chorley on a dual registration deal. On the 28th November 2022, it was announced that Andy Owens had joined Bootle on a dual registration deal with Chorley. Despite no official announcement from Macclesfield FC, this particular move appeared to indicate that Owens was no longer registered with the Silkmen.


HARRY FREEDMAN

On the 27th January 2022, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of former Halifax Town striker Harry Freedman. Besides Halifax Town, before joining the Silkmen, Freedman had also previously played for Staylbridge Celtic, Glossop North End and Curzon Ashton. Freedman is the son of former Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest striker Dougie Freedman. On the 12th March 2022, after the Silkmen were crowned North West Counties Premier Division champions, Robbie Savage announced via the Official Macclesfield FC Facebook page that Harry Freedman had signed a new deal at the club. On the 13th March 2022, Freedman’s contract was confirmed, with Freedman signing a new deal until the end of the 2022/23 season, with the option of extending for an additional 12 months. At the time of his new contract, Freedman had featured 8 times for the Silkmen, scoring once. On the 29th July 2022, ahead of the 2022/23 season, it was announced that Harry Freedman had joined Glossop North End on a season long loan. On the 6th May 2023, it was announced that Harry Freedman had been released by Macclesfield FC. Harry Freedman made 12 appearances for the Silkmen, scoring 2 goals. In July 2023, Harry Freedman signed a permanent deal at Glossop North End.


BOBBIE MCDONNELL

On the 7th March 2022, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of Bobbie McDonnell from North West Counties side Runcorn Town. McDonnell signed a deal at Macclesfield FC until the end of the 2022/23 season. McDonnell began his career at City Of Liverpool and also spent time on loan at Ashton United. McDonnell went on to join Sandbach United at the start of the 2021/22 season, scoring 16 goals before joining Runcorn Town in February 2022. McDonnell spent only one month at Runcorn Town, scoring once in four matches before joining the Silkmen. On the 21st July 2022, it was announced that Bobbie McDonnell had left Macclesfield FC to join Vauxhall Motors. McDonnell made six appearances for the Silkmen, failing to score a goal.


FINNAN CROFTON

Highly rated youth team player Finnan Crofton made his Silkmen debut off the bench for Macclesfield FC in the Silkmen’s match in the Macron Cup first round against Northwich Victoria on the 16th March 2022. Crofton featured regularly for Macclesfield FC in the pre-season of their 2021/22 season as a 15 year old but did not appear in a competitive squad until the match against Northwich Victoria. On the 6th May 2022, Robbie Savage announced via a Facebook Live on the Official Macclesfield FC Facebook page that Finnan Crofton had left the club. In February 2023, Finnan Crofton signed for Skelmersdale United. In August 2023, Finnan Crofton signed for Burscough.


TRE PEMBERTON

On the 20th May 2022, Macclesfield FC completed the signing of pacey forward Tre Pemberton from Northern Premier League side Stafford Rangers. Pemberton, who can also play at right back or the right of midfield, started his career with Blackburn Rovers before moving to Stoke City. After leaving Stoke City and before joining Stafford Rangers, Pemberton spent time at FC United Of Manchester and Longridge Town. Stafford Rangers announced via their Official Twitter feed that Macclesfield FC actually made an offer for Pemberton on the 5th March 2022, however, Pemberton had rejected the move. Pemberton scored 3 goals in 23 games for Stafford Rangers before signing a 12 month deal at the Silkmen. After 40 appearances for Macclesfield FC during the 2022/23 season, Tre Pemberton had established himself as the club’s starting right back. On the 17th May 2023, it was announced that Tre Pemberton had signed a new deal at the Silkmen. In June 2023, it was announced that Tre Pemberton had been named in the Northern Premier League West Division team of the year for the 2022/23 season.


NEIL KENGNI

On the 1st June 2022, Macclesfield FC completed the signing of striker Neil Kengni from Marine. Kengni began his career at Rochdale before moving to Stalybridge Celtic, scoring 14 goals in 68 appearances. Kengni then moved to Marine in May 2020 and scored 15 goals in the 2021/22 season as Marine were promoted to the Northern Premier League. Kengi was named Manager’s Player of the Season, Player’s Player of the Season and Top Goalscorer for Marine for the 2021/22 season. On the 18th May 2023, it was announced that Neil Kengni had signed improved terms on his current contract. At the time of Neil Kengni’s new deal, he had appeared 47 times for Macclesfield FC, scoring 13 goals. On the 18th January 2024, it was announced that Neil Kengni had signed a new deal at Macclesfield FC. At the time of Neil Kengni’s new deal, he had appeared 79 times for Macclesfield FC, scoring 18 goals.


NICKY MAYNARD

Ahead of the 2022/23 season, on the 4th August 2022, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of experienced striker Nicky Maynard. Maynard began his career at Crewe Alexandra, scoring 32 goals before moving to Bristol City for a fee of £2.25 million. Maynard scored 45 goals in four seasons at Bristol City before joining West Ham United. After 4 goals for West Ham United, Maynard moved to Cardiff City for a fee of £3 million. In 2015, Maynard joined Milton Keynes Dons on a permanent deal and has since played for Aberdeen, Bury, Mansfield Town, Newport County and Tranmere Rovers before joining the Silkmen. When Maynard signed for Tranmere Rovers in August 2021, it was announced that Maynard had turned down teams in League One to sign for them. One year later, Maynard joined Macclesfield FC in the Northern Premier League West Division. On the 16th April 2023, Nicky Maynard, via his personal Instagram account, announced his retirement from football. During his time at Macclesfield FC, Nicky Maynard scored 20 goals in 42 appearances. On the 4th August 2023, Nicky Maynard came out of retirement to sign for Cheshire Football League League Two side Winsford Town.


KANE DRUMMOND

On the 15th November 2022, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of striker Kane Drummond from Warrington Rylands. Drummond became Macclesfield FC’s manager David McNabb’s first signing since taking over at the club. Kane Drummond began his career at Liverpool before joining the Robbie Fowler Academy. Drummond then went on to join Warrington Rylands, who were at the time managed by David McNabb. In the 2021/22 season, Drummond excelled for Warrington Rylands as they were crowned champions of the Northern Premier League West Division, scoring 18 goals. Kane Drummond was named Northern Premier League West Division Player Of The Season for the 2021/22 season. On signing for Macclesfield FC, Drummond made the decision to drop down to the Northern Premier League West Division. On the 22nd November 2022, in a match against Runcorn Linnets, Kane Drummond was given a straight red card after only 42 minutes into his Macclesfield FC debut.


NTUMBA MASSANKA

On the 5th January 2023, Macclesfield FC completed the signing of striker Ntumba Massanka on a free transfer from South Shields. Massanka spent time during his youth career at both Manchester United and Manchester City before signing his first professional contract at Burnley. During his time at Burnley, Massanka spent time on loan at York City, Morecambe, Wrexham, Dover Athletic and Belgian side RWDM47 before his release at the end of the 2018/19 season. Massanka then featured for Chorley and Italian side ASD Angelana before signing for South Shields. Massanka made 15 appearances for South Shields, scoring 5 goals. During his time at South Shields, Massanka also spent time out on loan at Stalybridge Celtic, Boston United and Stafford Rangers. On the 6th May 2023, it was announced that Ntumba Massanka had been released by Macclesfield FC. Ntumba Massanka made 13 appearances for the Silkmen, scoring 2 goals. In July 2023, Ntumba Massanka signed for Cypriot side Digenis Akritas Morphou. In March 2024, Ntumba Massanka signed for Stalybridge Celtic.


DAN SWEENEY

On the 16th February 2023, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of striker Dan Sweeney for an undisclosed fee from Bromsgrove Sporting. On signing for the Silkmen, it was noted on the Macclesfield FC website that Dan Sweeney had turned down offers from clubs in higher divisions to sign for the Silkmen in the Northern Premier League West Division. Sweeney began his career at Kidderminster Harriers and after a short spell at Stourport Sweeney signed for Conference National side Solihull Moors in 2018. Sweeney failed to break into the starting 11 at Solihull Moors and spent time out on loan at Hednesford, Leamington, Gloucester City and Bradford Park Avenue. Dan Sweeney signed for Redditch United ahead of the 2021/22 season, scoring 14 goals before joining Bromsgrove Sporting at the start of the 2022/23 season. Before signing for Macclesfield FC, Dan Sweeney had scored 18 goals in 22 starts for Bromsgrove Sporting during the 2022/23 season. On the 10th May 2023, after 4 goals in 7 appearances for Macclesfield FC, Dan Sweeney left the club. Owner Robert Smethurst commented on the Macclesfield FC Official Facebook page that Dan Sweeney’s agent had ‘moved the goal posts’ in relation to Sweeney re-signing at Macclesfield FC. On the 2nd June 2023, Dan Sweeney signed for Spalding United. In December 2023, Dan Sweeney joined Alvechurch on a one-month loan deal. On the 27th February 2024, Macclesfield FC announced that Dan Sweeney had rejoined the club for an undisclosed fee from Spalding United.

AIDAN MCDADE

On the 28th February 2023, Aidan McDade was named on the bench for Macclesfield FC in their Cheshire Senior Cup Third Round tie against fellow Northern Premier League West Division side Runcorn Linnets. Ahead of the match it was announced that the squad for this match would be a mixture of Macclesfield FC first team, the International Academy, the Under 18 side and also players from the Macclesfield FC BTEC Academy. Aidan McDade was named Macclesfield FC International Academy Player’s Player Of The Year for the 2022/23 season. Aidan McDade was also named Macclesfield FC International Academy Manager’s Player Of The Year for the 2022/23 season.


TOM PEERS

On the 16th May 2023, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of striker Tom Peers from National League North side Curzon Ashton for an undisclosed fee. Peers scored 17 goals for Curzon Ashton during the 2022/23 season before dropping down a division to join Macclesfield FC for their 2023/24 season in the Northern Premier League. Tom Peers began his footballing career at Chester and has also featured for Hednesford Town, AFC Telford, Nantwich Town, FC United Of Manchester and Altrincham before joining National League North side Curzon Ashton on a permanent deal in February 2022. On the 20th October 2023, Tom Peers left Macclesfield FC to join National League North side Chester. Tom Peers made 13 appearances for the Silkmen, scoring 2 goals. In his final appearance for Macclesfield FC, Tom Peers missed a penalty as Macclesfield FC were knocked out of the FA Cup in the Fourth Qualifying Round in a 3.1 defeat against Alfreton Town.

DANNY ROWE

On the 13th October 2023, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of striker Danny Rowe, most previously of National League side Chesterfield. Danny Rowe began his career at Manchester United however after being released at 16, he started his career in Non League football at Blackpool Wren Rovers. Rowe impressed, earning a moving Kendal Town before joining Fleetwood Town. After numerous loan spells away from the club, as well as a season at Lincoln City, Rowe joined AFC Fylde. Danny Rowe spent 6 seasons at AFC Fylde scoring 155 goals. After leaving AFC Fylde in January 2020, Danny Rowe signed for then League Two side Oldham Athletic before joining Bradford City in January 2021. After only three months at Bradford City, Danny Rowe moved to National League side Chesterfield. Before his release from the club in October 2023, Danny Rowe had scored 10 goals, as well as spending time out on loan at AFC Fylde and York City. On the 7th November 2023, Danny Rowe was released by Macclesfield FC. Danny Rowe made 5 appearances for the Silkmen, without scoring a goal.

OUMAR NIASSE

On the 23rd November 2023, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of former Senegalese international striker Oumar Niasse on a short term contract. Oumar Niasse had been capped 9 times by the Senegal national team, scoring 3 goals. Oumar Niasse began his career at Senegalese side US Ouakam before earning a move to Turkish top flight side Akhisar Belediyespor. After 15 goals in his first season at the club, Niasse moved to Russia to sign for Lokomotiv Moscow for a deal worth £5.5 million. After 12 goals in 28 appearances for Lokomotiv Moscow, in February 2016, Oumar Niasse moved to English Premier League side Everton for £13.5 million. Niasse spent 4 years at Everton, scoring 8 goals as well as spending time out on loan at Hull City and Cardiff City. In March 2021, Niasse signed for Huddersfield Town before joining Burton Albion in February 2022. In March 2023, Oumar Niasse signed for League One side Morecambe before leaving the club at the end of the 2022/23 season. Oumar Niasse made his Macclesfield FC debut on the 5th December 2023 in the Silkmen’s Second Round Cheshire Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers. Oumar Niasse scored a hat trick as Macclesfield FC came out 4.2 winners. On the 29th January 2024, it was announced that Oumar Niasse had left Macclesfield FC. During his time at the Silkmen, Oumar Niasse made 7 appearances, scoring 3 goals.

TUNDE OWOLABI

On the 28th December 2023, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of Belgian striker Tunde Owolabi after his departure from Irish Premier Division side Cork City. After moving to England at the age of 18, Owolabi began his career at FC United Of Manchester before featuring for a number of Non League sides, mainly around the North West of England. In the 2018/19 season, Owolabi scored 22 goals for Radcliffe before re-joining FC United Of Manchester, scoring 35 goals in the 2019/20 season. Owolabi’s goalscoring form earned him a move to Scottish Premier League side Hamilton Academical in July 2020. In March 2021, Owolabi signed for Irish side Finn Harps before joining St Patrick’s Athletic in December of the same year. The following December, Tunde Owolabi signed for Cork City.

ADRIEN THIBAUT

On the 1st February 2024, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of Adrien Thibaut. Adrien Thibaut is primarily a striker however can also play either in attacking midfield or out wide. Thibaut began his career at Douglas Hall AFC, who were plying their trade in the Third Division in Republic Of Ireland. After some impressive form for Douglas Hall AFC at youth levels, Adrien Thibaut signed for Irish Premier Division side Cobh Ramblers. Adrien Thibaut left Cobh Ramblers in November 2023, signing for the Silkmen 2 months later. On the 1st March 2024, it was noted that Adrien Thibaut was no longer listed on the Player Profiles on the official Macclesfield FC website. Although no official announcement, it is thought he had left the club. During his time at the Silkmen, Adrien Thibaut made 1 appearance for the club. On the 2rd March 2024, Adrien Thibaut signed for Bradford Park Avenue.
