Player Profiles: Goalkeepers

BEN PIERCE

On the 8th July 2021, Macclesfield FC signed goalkeeper Ben Pierce after a successful trial period at the club. The commanding shot stopper spent time at Everton, Manchester City and Manchester United during his youth career. Pierce signed his first professional contract at West Bromwich Albion, spending three years at the club before joining Northern Irish side Portadown in February 2020. On the 4th April 2022, it was announced that Ben Pierce had been released by Macclesfield FC. Pierce made 11 appearances for the Silkmen, conceding 17 goals. Pierce’s final appearance for the Silkmen came on the 14th September 2021 in Macclesfield FC’s 1-0 win against Vauxhall Motors. In December 2022, it appeared that Ben Pierce had retired from football and began work as an independent travel agent.


STEVE HODSGON

First team goalkeeper coach Steve Hodgson signed a player/goalkeeper coach contract on the 9th July 2021. Initially signed solely as a goalkeeper coach, the veteran goalkeeper impressed during pre-season matches and was signed on playing terms. During his playing career, Hodgson turned out for a number of clubs such as Chester, Wrexham and Leek Town. Hodgson has had coaching experience at Mansfield Town, Wrexham and Stoke City. On the 24th November 2021, after the release of the new Macclesfield FC website, it was noted that Hodgson was not listed on the player profiles. Although no official announcement, it is thought he had left the club.


SAM ASHTON

On the 16th September 2021, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of experienced goalkeeper Sam Ashton. Ashton started his career at Bolton Wanderers before moving to FC United Of Manchester where the talented shot stopper made just shy of 200 appearances for the club. After leaving FC United, Ashton appeared for Skelmersdale United, Southport, Chorley, Ramsbottom, Lancaster City and Radcliffe before signing for Macclesfield FC. On the 4th April 2022, it was announced that Sam Ashton had been released by Macclesfield FC. Ashton featured regularly as the Silkmen won the North West Counties Premier Division in the 2021/22 season. Ashton featured 31 times for Macclesfield FC, conceding 34 goals. Despite being released, Ashton made an additional appearance for Macclesfield FC in the Macron Cup in a 4-1 win for the Silkmen against Brocton on the 12th April 2022. Sam Ashton was named the North West Counties Premier Division Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2021/22 season. On the 15th July 2022, Sam Ashton signed for Bootle FC. On the 29th October 2022, Sam Ashton signed for Skelmersdale United. In June 2023, Sam Ashton re-signed for Bootle FC. In August 2023, Sam Ashton featured for FC St Helens. In September 2023, Sam Ashton signed for Bury FC. At the end of the 2024/25 season, Sam Ashton retired from football and was appointed goalkeeper coach at Bury FC.


NICK WARD

Nick Ward was named on the bench for Macclesfield FC in their match against Longridge Town on the 20th September 2021. Nick had played for a number of local teams such as Poynton, Rylands and Northwich Victoria. Nick Ward is also assistant manager of the Macclesfield FC reserve team. On the 23rd January 2022, Nick Ward announced on the Official Macclesfield FC Fan Page that himself and reserve team manager Ed Haslam had left the club. After leaving Macclesfield FC, Nick Ward signed for Knutsford FC. In May 2023, Nick Ward was named joint manager of Knutsford FC.



ELLIOT COOPER

On the 2nd November 2021, Macclesfield FC announced that goalkeeper Elliot Cooper had joined the first team squad, progressing up from the youth set up at the Silkmen. On the 3rd January 2022, Cooper was named in the Macclesfield FC first team squad for the first time against Prestwich Heys. Cooper was an unused substitute. On the 8th February 2022, it was announced that Cooper had been selected for National Youth Football League National Trials. Despite no official announcement, on the 20th June 2022, Elliot Cooper confirmed via his personal Instagram account that he had left Macclesfield FC. In September 2022, Elliot Cooper signed for Alsager Town. In November 2022, Elliot Cooper featured for Congleton Town. In July 2024, Elliot Cooper signed for Abbey Hulton United. In September 2024, Elliot Cooper featured for AFC Alsager. In October 2024, Elliot Cooper featured for Ball Haye Green.

LIAM LOVELL

On the 5th November 2021, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of goalkeeper Liam Lovell from Cheadle Town. Before Cheadle Town, Lovell spent time at Rochdale, Curzon Ashton and Mossley. On the 24th November 2021, it was announced that Lovell had joined Avro. Liam Lovell made 1 appearance for the Silkmen in Macclesfield FC’s 2-2 draw with Runcorn Town on the 6th November 2021. In September 2022, Liam Lovell appeared for Bacup Borough. In February 2023, Liam Lovell signed for Runcorn Linnets.


DAN WALLIS

On the 18th January 2022, Dan Wallis signed a deal at Macclesfield FC until the end of the 2022/23 season after leaving Matlock. Wallis started his youth career at Derby County before joining Sheffield Wednesday. After his release from Sheffield Wednesday, Wallis featured for Norweigan side Valdres FK, Nottingham Forest, Chesterfield, Matlock, Grantham Town, Gainsborough Trinity and Stamford. Wallis rejoined Matlock in December 2021 but his spell was short lived as he joined the Silkmen a month later. On the 3rd March 2022, Wallis left the club after his contract was terminated by mutual consent. Wallis made 4 appearances for the Silkmen, conceding 1 goal. In April 2022, Dan Wallis re-signed for Stamford. In October 2023, Dan Wallis signed for Corby Town on a dual registration deal. In June 2024, Dan Wallis left Stamford by mutual consent. In June 2024, Dan Wallis signed for Shepshed Dynamo.


NATHAN PENNINGTON

On the 2nd May 2022, ahead of Macclesfield FC’s Macron Cup Quarter Final match against Skelmersdale United, the Silkmen announced the signing of Nathan Pennington. The goalkeeper signed a dual registration deal at the club, also being registered at West Lancashire Football League Division One side Tempest United. Pennington made his Macclesfield FC debut against Skelmersdale United, on the same day he was announced, with Macclesfield losing the match 2-3. On the 7th June 2022, it was announced that Nathan Pennington had signed a new permanent deal at Macclesfield FC, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2022/23 season. On the 13th June 2022, it was announced that Pennington had signed a dual registration deal with Squires Gate. On the 11th May 2023, Nathan Pennington signed a permanent deal at Squires Gate. Nathan Pennington made 2 appearances for Macclesfield FC, conceding 5 goals.


JOE MASON

On the 30th June 2022, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of goalkeeper Joe Mason from North West Counties Premier Division side Burscough. Mason, despite being only 16 years old excelled for Burscough in the second half of the 2021/22 season before the Silkmen swooped for the talented youngster. Mason began his career at Premier League giants Liverpool, spending eight years at the club before joining Burscough. On the 23rd July 2022, Joe Mason joined FC St Helens on a dual registration deal. In October 2022, whilst on loan at FC St Helens, Joe Mason was named the North West Counties Premier Division Goalkeeper Of The Month. After an injury to Macclesfield FC’s number one goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga, Joe Mason, at only 17 years of age, made his Silkmen debut in their 2.1 win at Prescot Cables on the 26th November 2022. On the 30th November 2022, Joe Mason appeared for Bootle. There was no official announcement by Macclesfield FC that Mason’s registration had been moved to Bootle. Although no official announcement, it is thought he had left the club. Joe Mason made 1 appearance for Macclesfield FC. In July 2023, Joe Mason signed for FC St Helens. In September 2023, Joe Mason signed Widnes on loan before returning to FC St Helens in October 2023.

MARCELO PITALUGA

On the 1st July 2022, Marcelo Pitaluga joined Macclesfield FC on loan from Premier League giants Liverpool until the end of the 2022/23 season. Pitaluga began his career at Brazilian side Fluminense, before joining Liverpool in 2020 for £2 million. Pitaluga was part of the Brazil under 17 side in 2019 who won the under 17 World Cup. Pitaluga was a regular for Liverpool under 23’s before joining the Silkmen. Marcelo Pitaluga made 25 appearances for Macclesfield FC during his loan spell, conceding 17 goals. On the 5th January 2024, Marcelo Pitaluga joined Irish Premier Division side St Patrick’s Athletic on loan. On the 1st July 2024, Marcelo Pitaluga was recalled by Liverpool from his loan spell at St Patrick’s Athletic. On the 30th August 2024, it was announced that Marcelo Pitaluga had joined Scottish Championship side Livingston on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season. On the 7th January 2025, Marcelo Pitaluga re-joined Brazilian side Fluminense on a permanent deal from Liverpool.

GEORGE BYRNE

On the 6th August 2022, in Macclesfield FC’s FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round match against Wythenshawe Town, youth team goalkeeper George Byrne was named on the bench and was an unused substitute. George Byrne made his Macclesfield FC debut on the 31st October 2023, coming off the bench in the Cheshire Senior Cup First Round against Sandbach United. In June 2024, George Byrne signed for New Mills FC. During his time at Macclesfield FC, George Byrne made 1 appearance. In July 2025, George Byrne signed for Alsager Town. In February 2026, George Byrne signed for Barnton.


WYLL STANWAY

On the 29th November 2022, after an injury to then current first choice goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga, Macclesfield FC announced the loan signing of goalkeeper Wyll Stanway from National League North side Chester. Stanway began his career at Holker Old Boys before joining Lancaster City. Chester then swooped to sign the talented youngster with Stanway impressing in loan spells at FC United Of Manchester and Bootle before joining the Silkmen on loan until the end of the 2022/23 season. Wyll’s sister Georgia Stanway was part of the England Lionesses which won the Women’s Euro 2022 Championships. On the 6th May 2023, it was announced that Wyll Stanway had returned to Chester. Wyll Stanway made 21 appearances for the Silkmen, conceding 15 goals. On the 10th May 2023, Robbie Savage announced via a Facebook Live on the Macclesfield FC Official Facebook page that Macclesfield FC had made an offer to keep Wyll Stanway at the club on a permanent deal. However, Macclesfield FC and Chester were unable to agree terms. On the 23rd May 2024, Wyll Stanway signed for League Two side Barrow for an undisclosed fee from National League North side Chester.


JOE O’SHAUGHNESSY

On the 6th February 2023, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of goalkeeper Joe O’Shaughnessy after his release from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers. O’Shaughnessy began his career at Wrexham before joining Burnley. After leaving Burnley, O’Shaughnessy signed a permanent deal at Wolverhampton Wanderers and spent time on loan at Hednesford Town and Bradford City before signing a permanent deal at the Silkmen. On the 9th March 2023, after 1 appearance for Macclesfield FC, Joe O’Shaughnessy signed for Northern Premier League side Stalybridge Celtic until the end of the 2022/23 season. On the 6th May 2023, it was announced that Joe O’Shaughnessy had been released by Macclesfield FC. Joe O’Shaughnessy made 1 appearance for the Silkmen. In June 2023, Joe O’Shaughnessy signed for Leek Town. In December 2023, Joe O’Shaughnessy signed for Atherton Collieries. In January 2024, Joe O’Shaughnessy moved to America to sign for the Florida Southern Mocccasins. On the 13th April 2024, it was announced that Joe O’Shaughnessy had joined Indiana based side Fort Wayne FC on loan until August 2024. In August 2025, Joe O’Shaughnessy signed for California based side UC Irvine Anteaters.


MAX JOHNSTONE

On the 16th May 2023, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of goalkeeper Max Johnstone from United Arab Emirates First Division side Gulf United for an undisclosed fee. Johnstone began his career at Fleetwood Town before joining Manchester United. After leaving Manchester United, Johnstone featured for Sunderland, St Johnstone and AFC Fylde before moving to the United Arab Emirates to sign for Gulf United. As well as being the first team goalkeeper at Gulf United, Johnstone was also the Head Of Goalkeeping as well as an Academy Coach. On the 17th November 2023, Max Johnstone was released by Macclesfield FC. During his time at the Silkmen, Max Johnstone made 8 appearances, conceding 8 goals. In January 2024, Max Johnstone signed for United Arab Emirates Third Division side Precision FC.


CONOR O’KEEFE

On the 16th August 2023, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of goalkeeper Conor O’Keefe. Conor O’Keefe began his career at Macclesfield Town, however never made a first team appearance for the club. After leaving Macclesfield Town, Conor O’Keefe featured for Loughborough University alongside his degree before signing for Spanish side CF Fuenlabrada. After leaving Spain, O’Keefe moved to Gibraltar side FC Bruno’s Magpies. O’Keefe then moved to Sweden, signing for Piteå IF, where in 2020 he was named Sweden’s Division 2 Goalkeeper of the Year. O’Keefe joined fellow Swedish side Vasalund IF in February 2023 before leaving the club in July 2023. In March 2024, after 14 appearances for Macclesfield FC, it was announced that Conor O’Keefe had joined National League North side Warrington Town on a dual registration deal. On the 9th May 2024, Conor O’Keefe was released by Macclesfield FC. During his time at the Silkmen, Conor O’Keefe made 16 appearances, conceding 22 goals. On the 24th June 2024, Conor O’Keefe signed for Ashton United. On the 15th October 2024, Conor O’Keefe signed for FC United of Manchester.

DYLAN BERRY

On the 3rd November 2023, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of Northern Ireland Under 21 international goalkeeper Dylan Berry on a one-month loan deal from Championship side Norwich City. Berry started his career at Northampton Town before earning a move to Norwich City. During the 2022/23 season, Dylan Berry spent a season long loan at National League South side St Albans City. Ahead of joining Macclesfield FC, Dylan Berry had also spent time on loan at Havant & Waterlooville. On the 5th December 2023, it was announced that Dylan Berry’s loan deal had been extended at Macclesfield FC by an additional month. At the time of this extension, Dylan Berry had made 6 appearances for the Silkmen, conceding 5 goals. On the 9th January 2024, after 13 appearances, conceding 13 goals, Dylan Berry’s loan deal was extended at Macclesfield FC from Norwich City until the end of the 2023/24 season. On the 23rd February 2024, Dylan Berry was recalled from his loan spell at Macclesfield FC by Norwich City. During his time at the Silkmen, Dylan Berry made 20 appearances, conceding 22 goals. In March 2024, Dylan Berry joined Hendon on a short term loan deal. On the 19th April 2024, Dylan Berry joined National League South side Chelmsford City on a loan deal until the end of the 2023/24 season. In August 2024, after his release from Norwich City, Dylan Berry signed for National League South side Ebbsfleet United. In December 2024, Dylan Berry was released by Ebbsfleet United. On the 7th January 2025, Dylan Berry signed for National League South side Welling United. On the 8th March 2025, Dylan Berry signed for Isthmian League Premier Division side Dulwich Hamlet. On the 18th March 2025, Dylan Berry joined National League South side Hampton & Richmond Borough on a dual registration deal with Dulwich Hamlet. On the 19th July 2025, Dylan Berry signed for Cypriot Second Division side APEA Akrotiri. On the 13th February 2026, Dylan Berry signed for Halesowen Town. In March 2026, Dylan Berry signed for Finnish Third Division side Rovaniemen Palloseura.


TOM WOOSTER

On the 1st February 2024, Macclesfield FC announced the loan signing of Manchester United academy goalkeeper Tom Wooster until the end of the 2023/24 season. Tom Wooster began his career at Barnsley, before earning a move to Premier League giants Manchester United in July 2021. As well as featuring regularly for Manchester United at under 18 level, Tom Wooster also spent time on loan at Bradford City. In February 2023, Tom Wooster joined North West Counties Premier Division side Ramsbottom United until the end of the 2022/23 season. During his time at Macclesfield FC, Tom Wooster failed to make an appearance. In August 2024, Tom Wooster joined National League North side Farsley Celtic on loan for the 2024/25 season. In June 2025, Tom Wooster was released by Manchester United. On the 26th September 2025, Tom Wooster signed for Premier League side West Ham United.

JOE HILTON

On the 23rd February 2024, Macclesfield FC announced the loan signing of Joe Hilton until the end of the 2023/24 season from Championship side Blackburn Rovers. Joe Hilton played for Manchester City at youth levels before signing a professional deal at Everton. In July 2019, Joe Hilton left Everton and signed for Blackburn Rovers. At the time of his move to Macclesfield, Hilton had yet to make an appearance for Blackburn Rovers, however, had spent time out on loan at Marine, Fleetwood Town, Ross County and Hamilton Academical. During his time at Macclesfield FC, Joe Hilton made 6 appearances for the Silkmen, conceding 3 goals. On the 3rd February 2025, Joe Hilton signed for League Two side Bradford City for an undisclosed fee from Blackburn Rovers.

DANNY TABERNER

On the 1st March 2024, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of experienced goalkeeper Danny Taberner on a deal until the end of the 2023/24 season. Danny Taberner began his career at Rochdale, becoming their youngest ever player, making his first team debut at just 16 years of age. After leaving Rochdale in 2012,. Taberner made a name for himself in the Non League scene, appearing for a number of Non League sides: Salford City. Stockport Sports, Atherton Collieries, Prestwich Heys, Ramsbottom United, Northwich Victoria, Cheadle Town, City Of Liverpool, Runcorn Linnets, Guiseley and Bury FC , before signing for Macclesfield FC. On the 9th May 2024, Danny Taberner was released by Macclesfield FC. During his time at the Silkmen, Danny Taberner failed to make an appearance. In June 2024, Danny Taberner signed for Staylbridge Celtic. In December 2024, Danny Taberner signed for Prescot Cables. On the 20th December 2024, Danny Taberner signed for Ramsbottom United.


OLLIE BYRNE

On the 27th March 2024, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of goalkeeper Ollie Byrne, most recently of National League side Altrincham. Ollie Byrne began his career at Manchester United before joining Cardiff City in 2016. After 2 years at Cardiff City, Byrne joined Blackburn Rovers before joining Stevenage in 2019. After only 7 months at the club, Ollie Byrne dropped into Non League football, joining Atherton Collieries. After a short spell, Ollie Byrne went on to join Welsh side Connah’s Quay before joining Altrincham in July 2022. Before joining Macclesfield FC, Byrne also spent time out on loan at Irish Premier League side Cork City. On the 9th May 2024, Ollie Byrne was released by Macclesfield FC. During his time at the Silkmen, Ollie Byrne made 8 appearances, conceding 8 goals. On the 30th July 2024, Ollie Byrne signed for Macclesfield FC’s Northern Premier League rivals FC United Of Manchester.


MAX DEARNLEY

On the 6th July 2024, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of 6ft 6′ goalkeeper Max Dearnley after his departure from National League North side Buxton. Max Dearnley began his career at Penistone Church before signing for Ossett United. Dearnley’s impressive form at Ossett United earned him a move to Huddersfield Town. Dearnley spent two years at Huddersfield Town, without making a first team appearance before joining Farsley Celtic on a permanent deal ahead of the 2022/23 season. Ahead of the 2023/24 season Max Dearnley joined Buxton. During the 2023/24 season, Max Dearnley spent a loan spell at fellow National League North side Chorley. On the 4th April 2025, after Macclesfield FC were crowned Northern Premier League champions with 6 matches to spare, it was announced that Max Dearnley had signed a new contract at Macclesfield FC. At the time of this new contract, Max Dearnley had made 44 appearances for Macclesfield FC, conceding 35 goals and keeping 18 clean sheets. On 26th April 2025, Max Dearnley was named the Macclesfield FC Director’s Player Of The Year, as well as the Macclesfield FC Sponsor’s Player Of The Year for the 2024/25 season. On the 12th June 2025, Max Dearnley was named in the Northern Premier League Team Of The Year for the 2024/25 season.


TOM SCOTT

On the 6th July 2024, Macclesfield FC completed the signing of goalkeeper Tom Scott after his departure from Northern Premier League side Bradford Park Avenue. Tom Scott began his career at Manchester City before joining Port Vale. Ahead of the 2021/22 season, Tom Scott left Port Vale and joined Halifax Town. During his time at Halifax Town, Tom Scott made 1 appearance. Tom Scott also had a number of loan spells away from the club, featuring for Guiseley, Nantwich Town, Ashton United and Bradford Park Avenue. During Tom Scott’s time at Bradford Park Avenue during the 2023/24 season, he was managed by former Macclesfield FC manager Danny Whitaker as they were relegated from the Northern Premier League. On the 16th September 2024, it was announced that Tom Scott had been released by Macclesfield FC. During his time at the Silkmen, Tom Scott made 1 appearance, conceding 0 goals in their 3.0 win against Tadcaster Avenue on the 31st August 2024.


JUSTIN GRIFFITH

On the 5th November 2024, Justin Griffith was named in goal for Macclesfield FC in their Cheshire Senior Cup Second Round tie against Northern Premier League West Division side Stalybridge Celtic. Ahead of the match, due to a number of upcoming important fixtures for Robbie Savage’s Macclesfield FC first team, it was announced that the squad for this match would be a mixture of players from the Macclesfield FC International Academy, the Under 18 side and also players from the Macclesfield FC BTEC Academy. Before appearing in this match for Macclesfield FC, Justin Griffith had previously been capped twice for the Barbados national side.


JOE NICHOLSON

On the 7th August 2025, two days before Macclesfield FC kicked off their 2025/26 season in the National League North, the Silkmen announced the signing of goalkeeper Joe Nicholson. Joe Nicholson spent time during his youth at Championship side Preston North End before signing as a first year scholar at National League side Rochdale. Joe Nicholson failed to gain a professional contract and was released by Rochdale at the end of the 2024/25 season . At the time of signing for Macclesfield FC, Joe Nicholson had yet to make a competitive appearance in senior football. Despite no official announcement from Macclesfield FC, on the 28th November 2025, Joe Nicholson appeared for North West Counties Premier Division side Cheadle Town.

SHEA CALLISTER

On the 23rd October 2025, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of goalkeeper Shea Callister on a dual registration deal from North West Counties Football League Division One North side Maghull. Shea Callister featured for Blackburn Rovers and Burnley at youth level before signing for Salford City. Shea Callister had loan spells at 1874 Northwich, Burscough and Clitheroe before signing a permanent contract at Hull City in October 2024. After a loan spell at Brighouse Town, Shea Callister was released by Hull City at the end of the 2024/25 season. Ahead of the 2025/26 season, Shea Callister signed for Maghull. Despite no official announcement from Macclesfield FC, Shea Callister appeared for Lower Breck. It is thought that Shea Callister’s dual registration with Macclesfield FC had transferred from Maghull to Lower Breck. On the 5th February 2026, Shea Callister signed for Irish Premier Division side Derry City from Macclesfield FC. During his time at Macclesfield FC, Shea Callister made 2 appearances.


ROGAN RAVENHILL

On the 20th February 2026, Macclesfield FC announced the signing of goalkeeper Rogan Ravenhill on loan from League One side Barnsley until the end of the 2025/26 season. On the same day as signing for Macclesfield FC, Rogan Ravenhill signed a new deal at Barnsley after an impressive loan spell at National League North side Leamington. Previously, Rogan Ravenhill had spent time on loan at Liversedge and Matlock Town before joining Leamington on loan at the beginning of the 2025/26 season. On the 20th February 2026, Rogan Ravenhill’s loan spell at Leamington was terminated to allow him to join Macclesfield FC.
